Selections From The Poetical Works Of Robert Browning
Second Series
New Edition
Published by Smith, Elder & Co: London 1895
In Original Cloth Bindings

"Selections From The Poetical Works Of Robert Browning - Second Series presents a substantial selection from the poetry of Robert Browning (1812-1889), one of the foremost English poets of the Victorian era. Browning became particularly celebrated for his dramatic monologues, psychological insight and remarkable ability to create distinctive voices through verse. This Second Series gathers poems displaying the extraordinary range of his work, from short lyrical pieces concerned with love, nature and faith to longer narrative and dramatic compositions exploring character, morality and human motivation.

The collection includes such pieces as A Wall, Apparitions, Natural Magic, Magical Nature, The Lost Mistress, One Way of Love, The Heretic's Tragedy, Holy-Cross Day and many others drawn from Browning's extensive body of work. Together they provide an accessible survey of the poet's characteristic mixture of intellectual complexity, emotional intensity and experimentation with poetic voice and form. Browning's influence upon later poetry was considerable, and these contemporary selections helped introduce his enormous and sometimes challenging output to a broader late-Victorian readership.

Published in London by Smith, Elder & Co. in 1895, only six years after Browning's death, this New Edition of the Second Series is an attractive late nineteenth-century collection retaining its original publisher's burgundy cloth bindings, with blind-stamped decoration to the boards and gilt lettering and ornamentation to the spine. Of additional period interest is the early presentation inscription dated 1898, giving the volume a pleasing provenance from only three years after publication. An appealing Victorian edition of Browning's poetry in its original bindings, suitable both as a literary collectible and as a handsome example of late nineteenth-century book production."
