"Published at the height of Bendigo's prosperity, A Voice From The Golden City is a scarce collection of poetry and occasional verse by local writer William Pascoe, issued by Bolton Bros. of Bendigo in 1895. Containing over two hundred pages, the work captures the civic pride, patriotic spirit, and everyday concerns of a thriving Victorian goldfields community. The contents range widely, with poems devoted to Bendigo itself, Queen Victoria's Jubilee, the Eight Hours movement, General Gordon, rainfall, charity, and other subjects reflecting the social life of late nineteenth-century Australia.

More than simply a book of verse, this volume serves as a fascinating window into colonial Bendigo during the years immediately following the city's renaming from Sandhurst to Bendigo. The poems reveal strong imperial loyalties while also expressing an emerging sense of Australian identity, evidenced by pieces such as the "Australian National Hymn" and verses celebrating local events and notable figures. As such, the book occupies an interesting place between literature and regional history, preserving many themes and sentiments that characterised life on the Victorian goldfields during the 1890s.

Offered here in the desirable 1895 first edition, the work remains housed in its attractive original blue cloth bindings with gilt lettering and decoration. Early Bendigo imprints are increasingly sought after by collectors of Australian poetry, Victorian regional history, and goldfields literature, and this handsome survivor represents an evocative and uncommon piece of colonial Australian publishing from one of the nation's great nineteenth-century cities."
