Nuggets In The Devils Punch Bowl And Other Australian Tales
By Andrew Robertson
Published by Melville, Mullen & Slade: Melbourne 1894 1st Edition
Vintage Rebind With Cloth Inlaid Title To Cover

"Nuggets In The Devil's Punch Bowl And Other Australian Tales is a scarce collection of colonial fiction by Andrew Robertson, author of The Kidnapped Squatter, and represents a fine example of late nineteenth-century Australian storytelling. Published simultaneously in London, New York and Melbourne in 1894, the volume contains four substantial tales — Nuggets In The Devil's Punch Bowl, Lanky Tim, Lost In The Bush and Thunder-and-Lightning — each drawing upon the hardships, mysteries and opportunities of life in the Australian bush and goldfields. Robertson's stories combine adventure, romance and suspense with vivid depictions of rural Australia and its colourful characters.

The title story follows Bill Marlock, a champion shearer whose strange dream leads him to the eerie Devil's Punch Bowl and a sequence of discoveries involving hidden gold, murder and unexpected fortune. Throughout the collection, Robertson demonstrates an intimate knowledge of colonial life and scenery, qualities praised by contemporary reviewers, who commended his originality and straightforward style. Rich in local colour and atmosphere, these tales belong to the formative period of Australian literature when writers sought to capture the unique character of the bush and the experiences of settlers and diggers.

Published in 1894 by Longmans, Green & Co. and Melville, Mullen & Slade, this first edition survives in an attractive vintage rebind with a distinctive cloth inlaid title panel to the upper cover. The volume also carries two appealing bookplates, adding further character and provenance to the copy. An uncommon work seldom encountered in commerce, it remains a desirable addition to collections of early Australian fiction, colonial literature and nineteenth-century Australiana."
