Plus Haut! Plus Grand!! Le Chicago ("Higher! Greater!! Chicago")

In Stunning Silver Decorated Cloth Bindings - All Edges Gilt

"Life and Heroic Deeds of Admiral Dewey Including Battles in the Philippines by Louis Stanley Young, published in Philadelphia in 1899, is a patriotic late-nineteenth-century account celebrating one of the most celebrated naval figures of the Spanish-American War. The book recounts the life and career of Admiral George Dewey, tracing his ancestry and early upbringing before following his rise through the ranks of the United States Navy. Particular attention is given to his distinguished service during the American Civil War and the qualities of leadership, discipline, and courage that would later define his reputation.

The central focus of the work is Dewey's famous victory at the Battle of Manila Bay in May 1898, one of the most decisive naval engagements of the Spanish-American War. Written in a spirited and patriotic tone typical of the era, the volume vividly narrates the destruction of the Spanish fleet and the emergence of American naval power in the Pacific. Alongside the battle narratives, the book also provides contemporary descriptions of the Philippine Islands—their climate, natural resources, cities, and the customs of their inhabitants—reflecting American curiosity and imperial interest in the newly contested territory at the close of the nineteenth century.

Lavishly produced for its time, the book is illustrated with numerous phototype engravings and portraits, including dramatic depictions of Dewey during the Manila campaign. As both a biography and a popular war chronicle, the work captures the sense of national pride that surrounded Dewey's triumph and the wider American victory in the Philippines. It would appeal to collectors of Spanish-American War history, naval and maritime enthusiasts, and readers interested in turn-of-the-century patriotic publications."
