The rebellion began on 10 May 1857 in the form of a mutiny of sepoys of the company's army in the garrison town of Meerut, 40 mi (64 km) northeast of Delhi. It then erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions chiefly in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, though incidents of revolt also occurred farther north and east. The rebellion posed a military threat to British power in that region, and was contained only with the rebels' defeat in Gwalior on 20 June 1858. On 1 November 1858, the British granted amnesty to all rebels not involved in murder, though they did not declare the hostilities to have formally ended until 8 July 1859."General wear, fading, rub through, minor peeling and a few stains to covers and spines as shown. The Indian Mutiny Of 1857
By Colonel G.B. Malleson
Published by Seeley And Co Limited: London 1891 3rd Edition
All 6 Plates + Frontis Present As Called For

" The Indian Mutiny of 1857" by Colonel G. B. Malleson offers a detailed and authoritative narrative of one of the most dramatic uprisings in British colonial history. First published in the late nineteenth century, this 1891 third edition by Seeley & Co. presents Malleson's lucid and well-researched account of the causes, key battles, and personalities that shaped the rebellion. Drawing on official dispatches, eyewitness reports, and his own experience as a veteran officer in India, Malleson reconstructs the outbreak at Meerut and Delhi, the sieges of Lucknow and Cawnpore, and the wider repercussions across the subcontinent with clarity and restraint. The inclusion of all six plates and a frontispiece provides valuable visual context to the campaign's pivotal moments.

Written in the measured prose of a soldier-historian, Malleson's work remains one of the foundational English-language sources on the events that redefined British rule in India. It reflects both the Victorian fascination with imperial warfare and a growing attempt to understand the complexity of native resistance and colonial policy. This volume would appeal to collectors of 19th-century military history, students of British imperial affairs, and readers interested in first-hand analyses of the Indian Rebellion."
