Paracelsus, first issued in 1835, is a philosophical dramatic poem inspired by the life of the sixteenth-century physician and alchemist Paracelsus. The work follows its protagonist's relentless pursuit of knowledge and greatness, ultimately revealing the tragic cost of intellectual ambition pursued at the expense of human affection and spiritual fulfilment. The poem established Browning as a major new literary talent and introduced many of the themes that would define his later work.

Strafford, first performed in 1837, is Browning's historical tragedy centred upon the career and downfall of Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford, one of the principal advisers to King Charles I in the years preceding the English Civil War. The drama examines the complex interplay of political loyalty, friendship, honour, and betrayal as Strafford becomes entangled in the increasingly bitter conflict between Crown and Parliament. Although the play enjoyed only a brief stage life, it remains an important example of Browning's early experimentation with dramatic form and characterisation.

Together, these works reveal the young Browning's remarkable intellectual ambition and his fascination with extraordinary individuals driven by ideals, power, and the search for truth. This 1889 Smith, Elder edition, published in the year of the author's death, forms part of the collected Poetical Works and offers readers an excellent introduction to the themes of moral struggle, human aspiration, and psychological complexity that secured Browning's reputation as one of the foremost poets of the Victorian age."

Light wear and fading to covers and spine as shown.
