Stanford's Compendium Of Geography & Travel - Australasia
Edited by Alfred R. Wallace
With Ethnological Appendix by A.H. Keane
With Maps & Illustrations
Published by Edward Stanford: London 1880 2nd Edition

"Stanford's Compendium of Geography and Travel: Australasia is a comprehensive 19th-century geographical reference that offers detailed insights into the Australasian region. Edited and extended by naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, with an ethnological appendix by A.H. Keane, the volume is based on Friedrich von Hellwald's Die Erde und ihre Völker and was first published in 1879. The compendium covers a wide array of topics, including the physical geography, climate, geology, flora, fauna, and the social and cultural aspects of Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific islands. It also includes detailed maps and illustrations, providing readers with a vivid portrayal of the region during that period.

The work is notable for its systematic approach to the study of the region, combining scientific observations with ethnographic details. Wallace's contributions reflect his extensive experience and interest in the natural world, while Keane's appendix offers insights into the indigenous populations. The compendium serves as both a scientific resource and a travel guide, reflecting the colonial perspectives of the time. Its detailed descriptions and comprehensive coverage make it a valuable historical document for understanding the 19th-century European view of Australasia."
