"Kathleen: A Love Story is an early romantic novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924), the Anglo-American author who would later achieve international fame through such enduring classics as Little Lord Fauntleroy, A Little Princess and The Secret Garden. Written during the formative years of Burnett's literary career, Kathleen belongs to her early adult fiction and unfolds within a distinctly Victorian world of courtship, social reputation, romantic rivalry and personal independence. The novel displays the lively characterisation and perceptive observation of social relationships that would become hallmarks of Burnett's later writing.

The book is particularly interesting as an example of Burnett before the great children's classics, appearing at a time when she was establishing her reputation as a successful novelist on both sides of the Atlantic. The title page identifies her as the author of Theo, That Lass o' Lowrie's, Dolly and Pretty Polly Pemberton, firmly placing Kathleen within this important early period of her career. Its combination of romance and Victorian social observation provides an appealing glimpse of the developing literary style of an author whose subsequent works would remain in print for generations.

Published by George Routledge & Sons, London in 1878, this attractive early edition survives in its original Victorian decorated cloth binding. The green cloth boards are elaborately blocked in black and gilt, with floral ornamentation and gilt lettering extending across the front board and spine—a particularly attractive example of late nineteenth-century commercial book design. Now approaching 150 years old, this is a pleasing early Burnett publication with considerable decorative presence and strong crossover appeal to collectors of Frances Hodgson Burnett, Victorian literature and decorative Victorian bindings."

General wear, rub through, bumping etc to covers and spine as shown. Binding is decent overall and there are no loose pages. Small inscription as shown. A few pages with age toning, light foxing etc. A nice copy in good condition overall. Please study photos to further understand condition.
