The Man In The Iron Mask - A Poetical Romance
By George Gordon McCrae
Published by George Robertson: Melbourne 1873 1st Edition
In Original Gilt Decorated Cloth Bindings

"George Gordon McCrae's The Man In The Iron Mask: A Poetical Romance is one of the notable productions of nineteenth-century Australian literature and represents an early and ambitious contribution to colonial poetry. Published in Melbourne by George Robertson in 1873, the work transforms the famous mystery of the unidentified prisoner of Louis XIV's France into an extended narrative poem in four books. Written in flowing blank verse and romantic language, McCrae blends history, legend and imagination to create a richly atmospheric work centred upon one of Europe's enduring enigmas.

George Gordon McCrae (1833-1927), often described as one of the fathers of Victorian poetry, occupied a prominent place within Melbourne's literary circles alongside figures such as Adam Lindsay Gordon, Henry Kendall and Marcus Clarke. The Man In The Iron Mask was regarded as his most substantial poetic achievement, and contemporary critics recognised its literary merit. Longfellow himself later selected passages from the work for inclusion in an anthology of sea poetry, a testament to the quality and refinement of McCrae's verse. The volume stands as an important example of the cultural confidence emerging in colonial Victoria during the 1870s, when local writers increasingly sought to produce works of international calibre.

This 1873 first edition is especially desirable in its original gilt-decorated cloth bindings as issued by Melbourne publisher George Robertson. Preserved with its original dark-coated endpapers and publisher's advertisement dated January 1874 at the rear, the volume embodies the craftsmanship and character of early Australian book production. Copies surviving in such original condition are increasingly scarce, making this an important and highly collectible example of nineteenth-century Australian literature and an attractive acquisition for collectors of Australiana, poetry and colonial printing."
