Carthage And Her Remains: Being An Account Of The Excavations And Researches On The Site Of The Phoenician Metropolis In Africa And Other Adjacent Places
By Dr N. Davis
Published by Richard Bentley: London 1861 1st Edition

" Carthage and Her Remains: Being an Account of the Excavations and Researches on the Site of the Phoenician Metropolis in Africa and Other Adjacent Places by Dr. Nathan Davis, published by Richard Bentley in London in 1861, is a landmark work of nineteenth-century archaeology and exploration. Drawing upon his extensive fieldwork conducted under the auspices of the British government between 1856 and 1859, Davis documents the rediscovery of ancient Carthage and the uncovering of her Punic, Roman, and Christian layers. The volume is richly detailed, blending narrative travelogue with scholarly reporting, and features illustrations and plates depicting mosaics, inscriptions, coins, and artifacts unearthed during the excavations.

Davis's account captures both the grandeur and tragedy of the Phoenician metropolis, once the rival of Rome and now a field of ruin and relics. He vividly recounts the challenges of excavation, the historical debates surrounding Carthaginian civilization, and the monumental task of disentangling centuries of conquest and rebuilding. His narrative bridges the realms of archaeology, biblical history, and classical scholarship, offering one of the earliest and most systematic studies of the Carthaginian site prior to modern excavation methods.

The book stands as an enduring testament to Victorian archaeological ambition and the period's fascination with the ancient Mediterranean world. Combining meticulous observation with a sense of historical drama, Davis's work remains of great interest to historians of archaeology, classical scholars, and collectors of early travel and exploration books focused on North Africa and the Phoenician world.
