Salmon-Casts And Stray Shots
Being, Fly-Leaves From The Note-Book
Of John Colquhoun
Published by William Blackwood & Sons: Edinburgh 1858 2nd Edition
In Original Cloth Bindings

" Salmon-Casts and Stray Shots: Being Fly-Leaves from the Note-Book of John Colquhoun is a classic Victorian sporting work by the noted Scottish sportsman and naturalist best remembered for The Moor and the Loch. First published in 1858, this Second Edition of the same year gathers Colquhoun's practical observations and personal experiences of salmon and trout fishing, shooting and Highland field sports, combining detailed sporting knowledge with anecdote and descriptions of the Scottish landscape and its wildlife.

The work opens with an extensive section on salmon angling, discussing river conditions, changing flies, seasonal fishing, trolling, upstream fishing and the habits of salmon, much of it drawn directly from Colquhoun's own experience. The later chapters range more broadly through the Highlands and Islands, particularly Sutherland and the Sound of Mull, with accounts of grouse and wildfowl shooting, deer and roe, foxes, eagles, peregrines, ospreys, seals and other native wildlife. Colquhoun's mixture of practical instruction, sporting reminiscence and natural-history observation makes the book an evocative record of mid-19th-century Scottish sporting life.

The volume concludes with an Essay on the Natural History of the British Islands, further demonstrating Colquhoun's considerable interest in wildlife beyond its sporting associations. Published by William Blackwood & Sons of Edinburgh and London in 1858, this Second Edition remains in its original blind-embossed cloth binding with gilt spine lettering. An appealing early Victorian sporting title and particularly suitable for a collection devoted to angling, salmon fishing, Scottish natural history or Highland field sports. "
