The Personal History Of David Copperfield.
By Charles Dickens
With Illustrations by H. K. Browne
Published by Bradbury & Evans: London 1850 1st Edition (unknown impression)

"The Personal History of David Copperfield, published by Bradbury & Evans in 1850, stands as one of Charles Dickens's most celebrated and autobiographical novels, tracing the life of David from troubled childhood to hard-won maturity. This rare early first-edition copy—illustrated throughout by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz")—presents the novel as it first entered Victorian homes, complete with the original full-page plates that capture the humour, hardships, and emotional depth of Dickens's narrative. Themes of resilience, identity, social mobility, and the search for belonging are woven through David's encounters with unforgettable figures such as Aunt Betsey Trotwood, Mr. Micawber, Uriah Heep, and Steerforth, creating one of the richest character ensembles in Dickens's oeuvre.

Beyond its literary importance, this 1850 Bradbury & Evans first edition represents a cornerstone of Dickens collecting, marking the novel's earliest appearance following its serialisation and preserving the authentic pairing of text and Phiz's iconic illustrations. The work's blend of sentiment, satire, and personal reflection continues to resonate as one of the defining novels of the nineteenth century. This volume will particularly appeal to collectors of early Dickens, enthusiasts of Victorian literature, and those seeking an important cornerstone piece from the golden age of illustrated fiction."
