"A handsome mid-nineteenth-century edition of Eugene Aram: A Tale, by Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton, published in London by Chapman and Hall in 1849. First published in 1832, Eugene Aram is one of Bulwer Lytton's most fascinating and controversial novels, transforming the celebrated eighteenth-century criminal case of Eugene Aram, the scholarly schoolmaster convicted and executed in 1759 for the murder of Daniel Clark, into a dark psychological romance concerned with crime, conscience, love and guilt. The unusual circumstances of the historical Aram case, including contemporary uncertainty surrounding the evidence against him, made it particularly fertile ground for Victorian literary treatment.

Of particular interest, this 1849 edition represents an important stage in Bulwer Lytton's treatment of the story. Returning to the novel with the benefit of what he described as his "maturer judgment", Bulwer Lytton revised his interpretation of the evidence and came to believe that Aram, although implicated in the robbery of Clark, had not himself planned or committed the murder. He consequently altered Aram's confession in this edition to reflect that conclusion. Modern scholarship specifically identifies the 1849 edition as containing this significant revision, making it considerably more bibliographically interesting than simply a later Victorian reprinting of the novel.

The present copy is especially attractive in its period half-leather binding, with green leather spine and corners over striking red, blue and cream marbled boards, gilt rules, lettering and handsome gilt decoration to the spine. It retains the engraved frontispiece by Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"), the celebrated illustrator best remembered for his long association with Charles Dickens. Internally the volume runs to 296 pages, with the text printed in double columns, and displays the expected scattered foxing and toning of a book now more than 175 years old. The combination of its 1849 Chapman and Hall issue, Browne frontispiece and very attractive original-style leather and marbled binding makes this a particularly appealing example of one of Bulwer Lytton's darker and historically grounded works."
