"The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul is the celebrated devotional work of Philip Doddridge (1702-1751), the influential English Nonconformist minister, theologian and hymn writer. First published in 1745, the work became one of the most widely read evangelical devotional books of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and was notably written at the encouragement of the great hymn writer Isaac Watts, to whom Doddridge dedicates the work. Structured as a progressive guide to Christian faith and spiritual development, it addresses conversion, repentance, prayer, temptation, affliction, growth in grace, preparation for death and the responsibilities of the established Christian.
This 1845 edition, published and printed by Thomas Richardson and Son of Derby, contains Doddridge's complete sequence of serious and practical addresses, with a devout meditation or prayer accompanying each chapter, followed by his substantial sermon The Care of the Soul. Particularly attractive is the illustrated opening: an engraved portrait frontispiece of Philip Doddridge faces a separately engraved pictorial title page, depicting a woman reading devotionally in a landscape beneath the caption "Untold to me the Wonders of thy Word." These are followed by the conventional printed title page dated 1845.
The book remains in its handsome original Victorian half-leather binding, with dark green leather spine and corners over cloth-covered boards, the spine decorated with gilt rules and tooling and titled "RISE AND PROGRESS" in gilt. The page edges are attractively red-speckled, while early handwritten ownership inscriptions provide further evidence of the volume's long history as a genuinely used devotional book. Now more than 180 years old, this is an appealing period edition combining original binding, engraved portrait and pictorial title vignette with one of the enduring classics of English evangelical and Protestant devotional literature."
