"A rare early volume from the monumental French scientific expedition Voyage au Pôle Sud et dans l'Océanie under the command of the famed navigator Jules Sébastien César Dumont d'Urville. This is Tome Premier (Hydrographie), published in Paris by Gide, Éditeur in 1843, forming part of the hydrographic and mathematical analysis issued by the expedition. The work documents complex geometric, cartographic and navigational methods used aboard the corvettes L'Astrolabe and La Zélée during their Antarctic and Pacific voyages between 1837-1840.

The volume includes extensive mathematical tables and numerous engraved diagrams, most notably a large folding plate at the rear, showing detailed hydrographic and geometric studies relating to longitude, triangulation, and survey methods of the period. This early edition is printed in the original French and remains an essential reference piece for collectors of polar exploration, maritime history, and early scientific cartography. A substantial and increasingly scarce component of Dumont d'Urville's historic Antarctic series."
