"A scarce early continental edition of Dickens' Sketches, this 1843 Leipzig "Copyright Edition" published by Bernhard Tauchnitz represents one of the earliest authorised European printings of the author's formative works. Issued for English-language readers abroad, these Tauchnitz editions are increasingly collected in their own right, capturing Dickens at the outset of his literary rise with vivid observational pieces drawn from London life, originally published in periodicals during the late 1830s.

The volume gathers the celebrated "Seven Sketches from Our Parish," alongside "Scenes," "Characters," and "Tales," offering a rich cross-section of Dickens' early style—sharp, humane, and often darkly comic. These sketches provide fascinating insight into Victorian society, from street life and public institutions to intimate portraits of everyday figures, forming the foundation of themes he would later develop in his major novels.

Dickens's literary success began with the 1836 serial publication of The Pickwick Papers making this 1843 edition of Sketches a desirable early publication.

Presented here in original mid-19th century binding, the book shows heavy wear consistent with age and use, including a detached front cover, worn spine, and notable foxing throughout. Despite these condition issues, it remains a complete and authentic early Dickens printing with appealing provenance, including a period inscription dated 1859.
