The work traces Glasgow from its ancient and ecclesiastical origins through its emergence as one of Britain's great commercial and manufacturing centres, preserving an invaluable contemporary record of the people, events and institutions responsible for its extraordinary growth.
Cleland's narrative encompasses Glasgow's bishopric, university, municipal government, merchants and incorporated trades, churches, bridges, streets, markets and principal public buildings. It also records defining episodes in the city's history, including fires, floods, religious disputes, political disturbances, the Jacobite era and the notorious Shawfield Riots. Alongside the historical narrative are extensive accounts of charitable, educational and religious institutions, together with illuminating tables of population, accommodation, stipends, revenues and civic expenditure.
James Cleland (1770-1840) possessed exceptional authority as both historian and participant in Glasgow's development. Serving as Superintendent of Public Works, and as a member of the Philosophical Society of Glasgow and the Society of Civil Engineers in London, he enjoyed direct access to municipal documents and first-hand knowledge of the city's administration. Cleland became one of Scotland's notable early statisticians, and his combination of documentary research, civic experience and numerical evidence gives the work a depth rarely encountered in nineteenth-century local histories.
This desirable first edition of the 1829 publication remains in its handsome original half-leather binding, with marbled paper-covered boards, leather corners, an attractively decorated spine and contrasting gilt-lettered title label. Light wear, rubbing and fading to the original leather and marbled-paper bindings, as shown. The binding remains solid, with both covers secure and no loose pages. No inscriptions. Pages are clean and well presented, with light general age toning and occasional minor marks. An excellent, entirely original copy in very good condition overall.
