By 'The Author Of The Cooks Oracle' ( William Kitchiner)
Printed For Hurst, Robinson And Co: London 1922
In Original Leather & Gilt Bindings - Faded Marble Text Block - No Loose Pages

" First published in the early nineteenth century by the celebrated food writer and gastronome William Kitchiner, best known for The Cook's Oracle, The Art of Invigorating and Prolonging Life reflects the growing Victorian fascination with health, longevity, and sensible living. Written in an engaging and often humorous style, the work argues that good health is not merely a matter of medicine but of everyday habits. Kitchiner explores the influence of food, clothing, fresh air, exercise, sleep, and even moderate enjoyment of wine upon physical well-being, presenting practical advice intended to help readers lead longer, healthier, and more satisfying lives.

A substantial portion of the book is devoted to digestive health through its celebrated "Peptic Precepts," a collection of observations and recommendations designed to prevent and relieve indigestion, one of the most common complaints of the period. Drawing upon both personal experience and contemporary medical understanding, Kitchiner advocates moderation, careful dietary choices, regular exercise, and attention to the body's natural rhythms. While many of the medical theories reflect their age, much of the author's emphasis on balanced living, moderation, and preventative health remains surprisingly familiar to modern readers.

This 1822 Fourth Edition, enlarged, is an attractive and increasingly scarce survival from the Regency era, retaining its original leather and gilt bindings together with faded marbled text block edges. Beyond its practical advice, the volume provides a fascinating glimpse into early nineteenth-century attitudes towards health, diet, digestion, and everyday domestic life. Preserved with no loose pages and displaying the character and patina expected of a book more than two centuries old, it remains both an engaging period curiosity and an important work in the history of popular health literature.
