First published under this title in 1820, James Cleland's The Rise And Progress Of The City Of Glasgow is an important contemporary account of the city during one of the most transformative periods in its history. Beginning with Glasgow's ancient and ecclesiastical origins, Cleland traces its development into a major centre of commerce and manufacturing, recording the institutions, industries and civic improvements that shaped the rapidly expanding city. The work was printed in Glasgow by Young, Gallie & Company for James Brash and Company and extends to 296 pages, including a detailed index.
Cleland examines an exceptionally broad range of subjects, including Glasgow's churches, university, public buildings, hospitals, charities, schools, water supply, streets, markets, trades, manufactures and municipal government. Particularly valuable are the numerous statistical tables detailing population, occupations, trade fees, public expenditure and the operation of charitable and educational institutions. These carefully assembled figures offer a remarkable portrait of the economic and social organisation of Glasgow at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.
The author, James Cleland (1770-1840), was exceptionally well placed to compile such a record. A prominent civic administrator, statistician and historical writer, he served as Glasgow's Superintendent of Public Works from 1814 until 1834 and was closely involved in the management and improvement of the city. Cleland expressly drew upon his official position and first-hand knowledge of Glasgow's charities and public institutions, giving the work an authority extending well beyond that of a conventional local history. He later became recognised as one of Scotland's pioneering municipal statisticians. The Glasgow Story
This desirable first edition retains its impressive original half-leather binding, with gilt-decorated spine, leather corners and richly marbled paper-covered boards. Of particular importance is the surviving large folding statistical chart recording Glasgow's Sunday schools and Sabbath-school associations in 1819, including their patrons, teachers, scholars, libraries and methods of support. A substantial and increasingly uncommon early study of Glasgow, combining history, topography, civic administration and social statistics in one significant volume."
General wear, rubbing and fading to the original leather and marbled-paper bindings, as shown. The binding remains solid, with both covers secure and no loose pages. The large folding statistical chart is present and complete, with several closed tears, splits and associated wear as photographed. A faint pencil inscription appears on the title page; otherwise internally clean and well presented, with light general age toning and occasional minor marks. An excellent, entirely original copy in very good condition overall. Please study the photographs carefully for a full understanding of condition.
