Florence & Some Tuscan Cities
Painted by Colonel R.C. Goff
Described by Clarissa Goff
Published by Adam and Charles Black: London c1905 1st Edition
All Plates & Tissue Papers Present

" Published in 1905 by Adam & Charles Black of London, Sicily is a finely produced first edition in the celebrated "Painted By" series, featuring evocative colour plates by Alberto Pisa and descriptive text by Spencer C. Musson. Pisa's atmospheric watercolours capture the island's rich blend of classical ruins, Norman cathedrals, Byzantine mosaics, sunlit coastlines and bustling Sicilian street life, while Musson's accompanying narrative provides historical context and cultural insight. Together, image and text present Sicily as a meeting place of civilisations—Greek, Roman, Arab and Norman—woven into a landscape of extraordinary colour and architectural splendour.

Characteristic of the Adam & Charles Black travel volumes of the Edwardian period, this edition is handsomely bound in decorative cloth with an Art Nouveau-inspired vine and grape design in gilt and colour, echoing the Mediterranean subject matter. The production quality is notable, with mounted colour plates protected by original tissue guards, offering readers a luxurious visual journey through Palermo, Taormina, Syracuse, Monreale and other historic centres. The book stands as both a travelogue and an artistic record of Sicily before the upheavals of the twentieth century.

This is a particularly attractive example, complete with all plates and tissue papers present, preserving the integrity and visual richness intended by the publisher. As a first edition from 1911, it represents an early and desirable issue of the series, appealing to collectors of illustrated travel books, Edwardian colour-plate volumes, Italian topography, and admirers of Alberto Pisa's architectural watercolours."
