London England und Schottland
Von E.G. Ravenstein
Published by Bibliographisches Institut: Hildburghausen 1871
Meyers Reisebucher (Meyer's Travel Books): Meyers Reisebücher (1862-1936) were a series of German-language travel guide books published by the Bibliographisches Institut of Hildburghausen and Leipzig.

" Ernst Georg Ravenstein (Ernest George) FRSGS (30 December 1834 - 13 March 1913) was a German-English geographer and cartographer. As a geographer he was less of a traveller than a researcher; his studies led mainly in the direction of cartography and the history of geography.

This is a richly detailed travel and geographical account intended for a German-speaking audience. The book offers vivid descriptions of London's rapid urban growth during the 19th century, highlighting its architecture, commerce, public institutions, and social life. Ravenstein, a noted geographer and cartographer, combines factual observations with cultural commentary, giving readers a comprehensive sense of the city as both a global hub of power and a place of everyday human activity.

The work then extends its focus beyond London to the broader landscapes of England and Scotland, presenting their historical sites, industrial centers, and natural scenery. Ravenstein's writing emphasizes contrasts between bustling cities and the rural beauty of the countryside, reflecting the changing face of Britain in the age of industrialization. For contemporary readers, the book served both as an informative guide and as a window into British society, while today it remains a valuable cultural document, capturing how 19th-century Germany viewed the British Isles at the height of their influence."
