" Thomas Falconer's The Voyage of Hanno (London, 1797) presents a scholarly and ambitious examination of one of antiquity's most intriguing exploration narratives—the Periplus of Hanno the Carthaginian. This first edition offers the translated account alongside the original Greek text, allowing readers to engage directly with the classical source. Falconer situates Hanno's reported voyage along the western coast of Africa within the broader debates of 18th-century scholarship, responding in detail to critics such as Mr Dodwell who dismissed the narrative as apocryphal. The result is a rigorous defence of the voyage's authenticity, grounded in philology, classical testimony, and comparative geography.

Falconer strengthens his argument by drawing upon the accounts of modern travellers and geographers, carefully correlating ancient descriptions with contemporary observations of the African coastline. The work includes extensive testimonia from classical authors—Aristotle, Pliny, Pomponius Mela and others—together with analytical dissertations that explore chronology, navigation, and Carthaginian maritime capability. Particularly notable are the three substantial fold-out maps, engraved after Ptolemy, D'Anville, and Bougainville, which visually reconstruct Hanno's route from the Pillars of Hercules down the Atlantic seaboard toward the Gulf of Guinea, reflecting the Enlightenment fascination with reconciling ancient geography and modern discovery.

Printed by T. Cadell Jun. and Davies in 1797, this extremely scarce first edition represents a significant intersection of classical scholarship, early African exploration studies, and 18th-century cartographic interpretation. The combination of Greek and English text, extended dissertations, and large engraved folding maps makes the volume both intellectually substantial and visually impressive. A rare and important work, it would particularly appeal to collectors of early exploration literature, classical geography, African cartography, and Enlightenment-era scholarship.
