"George Leo Haydock (1774 - 1849) was a priest, pastor and Bible scholar from an ancient English Catholic Recusant family. His edition of the Douay Bible with extended commentary, originally published in 1811, became the most popular English Catholic Bible of the 19th century on both sides of the Atlantic. It remains in print and is still regarded for its apologetic value.

The Catholic Family Bible (1855) by Rev. Geo. Leo Haydock is a richly annotated edition of the Douay-Rheims Bible, produced for Catholic households seeking both devotional use and deeper study of the Scriptures. Haydock's extensive commentary provides theological, historical, and moral notes aimed at guiding readers toward a faithful Catholic interpretation of the text, often defending traditional teachings against Protestant critiques. The volume is beautifully presented, with engraved illustrations, detailed marginal references, and a layout designed for family reading, making it both a spiritual and educational centrepiece of the 19th-century Catholic home.

Bound with this is The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (1851), also published by A. Fullarton & Co., which offers a stand-alone presentation of the New Testament text in the Douay-Rheims translation. This section includes its own title page, prefaces, and summaries of the Gospels and Epistles, providing an accessible format for daily reading and study. Together, these combined volumes represent a significant artifact of mid-19th-century Catholic publishing, valued for their theological insight, fine printing, and historical role in preserving Catholic scriptural tradition for English-speaking families."

This bible has been beautifully rebound retaining the original cover and spine skins. Endpapers have been replaced and there are no inscriptions. The rebind has been executed with precision and the text block is firm and tight with no loose pages. Pages are overwhelmingly clean with some age toning present. There are full page 42 plates present along with 2 maps, the vignette + frontis. Several of the plates have "ink transferred" to the tissue papers resulting in stunning impressions of the original plate. A stunning bible that presents exceptionally well and is a delight to peruse. Very good condition overall. Please study photos to further understand condition.
