"
Sports and Sportsmen - South Africa, compiled and edited by The Cape Times and published by Atkinson & Partners in Cape Town, offers a richly illustrated survey of the sporting life of South Africa during the early 20th century. The book provides a comprehensive record of the country's diverse athletic pursuits, including cricket, rugby, horse racing, hunting, boxing, and athletics, while also touching on more regionally distinctive activities such as big-game hunting and polo. Each section highlights notable figures, teams, and events, portraying the rise of organized sport as both a pastime and a marker of social identity in a rapidly modernizing South Africa.
Beyond its celebration of achievements, the volume serves as a cultural snapshot, revealing how sport was intertwined with colonial society, class structures, and notions of prestige. Biographical sketches of leading sportsmen, alongside photographs and anecdotes, capture the personalities who shaped South Africa's sporting tradition. At once a reference work and a commemorative volume, it preserves the memory of early champions while underscoring the central place of sport in uniting communities and projecting South Africa's image abroad."
