The Poetical and Prose Works Of Robert Burns
With Life, Notes and Correspondence by A. Cunningham
By Robert Burns
Published by Charles Daly: London c1850 (undated - inscription dated 1854)
In Presentation Red Leather & Gilt Bindings - All 16 Illustrations/Plates Present As Called For - Melbourne Provenance.

"This substantial mid-nineteenth-century edition presents the poetical and prose works of Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, together with a biographical account, explanatory notes and correspondence assembled by Allan Cunningham. Published in London by Charles Daly and undated, the volume can be confidently placed no later than 1854 from its contemporary Melbourne presentation inscription. It offers an extensive portrait of Burns not only as a poet and songwriter, but also through his letters, personal history and relationships.

The collection embraces the works upon which Burns's enduring reputation rests, including Tam o' Shanter, The Jolly Beggars, The Cotter's Saturday Night, Auld Lang Syne, Scots Wha Hae, To a Mouse and To a Mountain Daisy. Written in both Scots and English, these works range across love, friendship, rural life, humour, social inequality, patriotism and human frailty. Burns's combination of lyrical warmth, sharp observation and sympathy for ordinary people secured his place among the most influential literary voices of the Romantic era.

Cunningham's accompanying life, notes and selection of correspondence provide valuable historical and personal context, tracing Burns's development from Ayrshire farmer to celebrated poet. The inclusion of his letters—including the celebrated Clarinda correspondence—reveals the intelligence, passion and complexity behind the public figure. The title page further records the inclusion of original pieces from the collection of Sir Egerton Brydges, adding another noteworthy literary dimension to this comprehensive Victorian edition.

The volume is illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, engraved vignette title and a series of finely executed plates depicting celebrated poems and songs, with all 16 illustrations present as called for. It is especially distinguished by its magnificent contemporary presentation binding in full red leather, richly decorated in gilt and blind, with raised spine bands, elaborate gilt compartments, gilt turn-ins and all edges gilt. A dated Melbourne inscription from October 1854 establishes early colonial Australian provenance, transforming this beautifully preserved volume into an evocative survivor of Melbourne's formative gold-rush era and a particularly desirable association copy for the collector of Burns, fine bindings or colonial Australian history."
