"Man's Fate, originally published in French as La Condition Humaine, is André Malraux's celebrated novel of revolution, political commitment and human endurance. Set in Shanghai during the failed Communist uprising of 1927, the story follows a varied group of revolutionaries, organisers, adventurers and political figures as they confront violence, betrayal and the collapse of their cause. First published in France in 1933, the novel won the prestigious Prix Goncourt and established Malraux as one of the foremost European writers of his generation.

Beginning with the revolutionary Ch'en preparing to commit an assassination, the novel moves through a tense sequence of insurrection, street fighting and political manoeuvring. Among its principal characters are the committed revolutionary Kyo Gisors, his European wife May, the intellectual and opium-addicted Gisors, and the disillusioned Baron de Clappique. Although firmly grounded in the Chinese revolutionary struggle, Malraux's greater subject is the human condition itself: the search for dignity, fellowship and meaning in a world shaped by suffering, isolation and inevitable death.

This early Modern Library edition presents Haakon M. Chevalier's influential English translation, first copyrighted in America in 1934 by Harrison Smith and Robert Haas. It includes Chevalier's substantial translator's introduction, a biographical note on Malraux and a bibliography of his early writings. Bound in the characteristic grey cloth of the period with black title panels and decorative Modern Library endpapers, this undated New York edition represents an early American appearance of one of the twentieth century's most important political and philosophical novels."
