The Wild Swans, or, The Adventure Of Roland Cleeve
By Mary C. Rowsell
Published by S.W. Partridge & Co: London c1895 (undated)
In Stunning Gilt Decorated Cloth Bindings - Includes 5 Illustrated Plates + Frontis - Rare Book

"First published in the 1830s and immensely popular throughout the Victorian era, The Ingoldsby Legends is a celebrated collection of humorous supernatural tales, gothic legends and comic verse written by Rev. Richard Harris Barham under the pseudonym "Thomas Ingoldsby." Blending folklore, satire and macabre storytelling, the work delights in ghostly monks, witches, highwaymen and eccentric clergy, all narrated with a lively wit and playful irreverence. Barham's richly descriptive style and sharp sense of humour made the collection a favourite of nineteenth century readers, influencing later gothic and comic writers alike.

This attractive Ward, Lock & Co edition from circa 1890 forms part of the publisher's "Minerva Library Of Famous Books" series and retains its handsome original decorated cloth binding. The volume is enhanced by reproductions of the celebrated illustrations by John Leech and George Cruikshank, whose lively steel engravings perfectly complement the book's blend of comedy and dark fantasy. Featuring 12 full-page illustrated plates together with the frontispiece portrait and decorative vignette title page, the edition presents beautifully as a classic late-Victorian gift or library volume.

Within its pages are some of Barham's most famous tales including The Spectre of Tappington, The Nurse's Story, The Witches' Frolic and many other whimsical narratives that combine medieval legend with Victorian comic sensibilities. Equal parts gothic entertainment and literary curiosity, The Ingoldsby Legends remains one of the enduring treasures of nineteenth century English humorous literature, prized today for both its imaginative storytelling and its wonderfully atmospheric illustrations."
