1930 Marcel Prevost Les Demi-Vierges Ltd Ed Antique French Fiction Book Leather
Les Demi-Vierges
By Marcel Prevost
Published by Libraire Hachette: Paris 1930
Limited Edition: 1 Of Just 200 Copies Issued - Fine Leather Binding - Illustrated - Marbled Endpapers
This finely produced 1930 "édition définitive" of Les Demi-Vierges by Marcel Prévost, issued by Librairie Hachette, is an elegant example of French literary publishing between the wars. Prévost, a member of the Académie Française, is best remembered for this controversial and perceptive novel exploring the social and moral tensions surrounding young women in late 19th-century society. The present edition forms part of the Les Grands Écrivains series and is enhanced by striking original illustrations by Gaston Fédit, engraved by Paul Baudier.
Particularly appealing is the limitation: this copy is one of just 200 examples printed on fine
Hollande Van Gelder paper
, noted in the colophon and indicative of a more deluxe issue within the edition. The typography is crisp and balanced, with strong Art Deco influence in its presentation, while the interior retains excellent clarity and wide margins. The inclusion of multiple engraved illustrations adds depth and visual interest throughout, elevating it beyond a standard reading copy.
The binding is a handsome half-leather example, with a richly toned spine, raised bands, and marbled boards, likely a later but high-quality binding that complements the text beautifully. Condition appears very good overall, with light wear to the spine ends and some natural age toning to the pages, but internally clean and well-preserved. A refined and collectible French literary edition, appealing to collectors of early 20th-century literature, fine press books, and decorative bindings.
