"The 3rd London General Hospital was one of the key medical facilities established in the United Kingdom during World War I to treat wounded soldiers returning from the front lines. Located in Wandsworth, South London, it was based at the Royal Victoria Patriotic Building, originally built in the 1850s as an orphanage for girls. At the outbreak of WWI in 1914, the British War Office requisitioned the building and converted it into a military hospital. Staffed by both military and civilian medical personnel, including members of the Royal Army Medical Corps and the newly formed Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADs), the hospital grew rapidly in capacity. At its peak, it could accommodate over 1,800 patients and specialized in treating a wide range of injuries, particularly those caused by trench warfare and new technologies like machine guns and gas attacks.

The 3rd London General became well known for its innovations in reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation. Surgeons such as Sir Harold Gillies pioneered techniques in facial reconstruction, laying the groundwork for modern plastic surgery. The hospital's role extended beyond physical healing—it also addressed psychological trauma, a growing concern during the war years. As a teaching hospital, it attracted some of the most skilled practitioners of the time and contributed significantly to the advancement of wartime medicine. After the war, the building returned to its original function, but the legacy of the 3rd London General Hospital remained as a symbol of the medical community's adaptability and dedication in times of crisis."
