" The Battle of Tobruk refers to several engagements fought around the port city of Tobruk, Libya, during World War II, primarily between April and November 1941. The battle was part of the North African campaign and involved Allied forces, mainly British, Australian, Indian, and Polish troops, defending the city against the German and Italian forces led by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. The port was a key strategic location because it allowed control over supply lines in the region.

The Siege of Tobruk lasted for 241 days, during which the Australian-led garrison, later reinforced by British and Polish troops, successfully resisted German and Italian attacks. The defenders, nicknamed the "Rats of Tobruk," became famous for their resilience in harsh desert conditions. The siege was finally lifted in November 1941 when Allied forces launched Operation Crusader, forcing Rommel's Afrika Korps to retreat. However, Tobruk fell again in June 1942, before being permanently recaptured by the Allies in November 1942. The battle played a crucial role in disrupting Axis supply lines and delaying Rommel's advance toward Egypt and the Suez Canal."
