" Tales Of A Grandfather (History Of Scotland) by Sir Walter Scott, Bart., published by Robert Cadell, Edinburgh, in 1851. One of Scott's enduring historical works, Tales of a Grandfather grew from his desire to recount the history of Scotland for his young grandson, John Hugh Lockhart, while writing in a manner that would remain engaging for adult readers. First issued in successive series from 1828, the work proved enormously popular and traces Scottish history through many of its defining personalities, conflicts and political upheavals.

This handsome 1851 edition brings Scott's Scottish narratives together in a substantial single volume, extending to 464 pages, with notes. The contents range from Macbeth, the Norman period and William Wallace through Robert the Bruce, the Stewart monarchs, the Reformation, the Jacobite era and the transformation of the Highlands. Particularly attractive is the engraved vignette title page depicting Dunfermline, preceding the principal letterpress title page. The use of engraved vignette title pages was also a feature of earlier Cadell editions of the work.

Most impressive is the book's original full leather binding, a particularly handsome mid-Victorian presentation with elaborate gilt and blind-tooled borders to both boards, raised bands to the spine, gilt-decorated compartments and all edges gilt. The original binding is even identified discreetly on the pastedown as "Bound by Seton Edinburgh." While the leather shows considerable age and wear—particularly along the hinges and spine—the boards remain wonderfully decorative and the gilt page edges retain considerable brilliance. A very appealing 175-year-old Scottish literary and historical volume, combining one of Sir Walter Scott's best-known works of popular history with an exceptionally attractive period leather-and-gilt binding."

General wear to covers and spine as shown. Lacks outer spine label and outer front spine hinge is splitting with cover wobbly but secure. No inscriptions. Pages are clean with pleasant age toning. Page binding excellent with nothing loose. A lovely copy in good to very good condition overall. Please study photos to further understand condition.
