Gallipoli Diaries - The Anzacs Own Story Day By Day
By Jonathan King
Published by Kangaroo Press: NSW 2003 1st Edition 1st Pressing

" The ANZACs (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) landed at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915, as part of the Allied campaign to capture the Ottoman-held Dardanelles Strait during World War I. The objective was to weaken the Ottoman Empire and open a supply route to Russia, but the troops faced fierce resistance from well-prepared Turkish forces. The steep cliffs, rugged terrain, and strategic positioning of the Ottomans made progress difficult. Despite their bravery and determination, the ANZACs were unable to achieve their goals and endured months of harsh conditions, including extreme weather, disease, and relentless enemy fire.

After eight months of fighting and heavy casualties, the Allies decided to withdraw in December 1915 and January 1916. Though the campaign was a military failure, it became a defining moment in Australian and New Zealand history, shaping national identities and giving rise to the ANZAC legend of courage, resilience, and mateship. The Gallipoli campaign is commemorated annually on ANZAC Day (April 25), honoring the sacrifices made by those who served."
