"Eileen Finlay was born in Maffra, North Gippsland in 1878. She mad a name for herself as an author with many short stories appearing in the papers in the 1940s. She was married to architect Alexander Finlay who was killed in a boating accident on Lake Tyers in 1921. They had two children Jock and Joyce. She was the author of 14 novels and many short stories. Eileen Finlay's first book, The Caravan Passes, was published in 1941 and remained her most successful. It was also reprised in further works -
The Caravan Returns
and Full Turn. Set in the hills outside Moe, its heroine was an unmarried mother, with the father of her child a married man. Her mother was shown as unfriendly to downright nasty - in her later books she tackled domestic violence, suicide, racism and even incest. These were not saccharine sweet works. The Caravan Passes was serialised on radio, and during the Second World War she was seen as one of Australia's most popular authors - but she never made any pretence of her work being great literature - it was more a case of stories she wanted to tell. As well as probably a need to earn a living. Later titles included
Galleon Proudly Sailing
, Crying in the Wilderness,
The Hills of Home
(and its sequel Storm Boyd's Family). Many were set in Gippsland, and she appears to have lived near Wilsons Promontory at one time."
Condition varies across all books. All books meet acceptable criteria and may include some page staining, worn covers, annotations/notes and tape repairs. Both included dustjackets in very poor condition. A very good "reading" library of several of Eileen Finlay's works (11 books as per photos). Note some doubles included. Please study photos to understand condition. Happy to provide more photos on request.
