The Works Of Sir Edwin Landseer - c1880 - Antique Illustrated Engravings Book

The Works Of Sir Edwin Landseer
Illustrated by Fourty-Four Steel Engravings and About Two Hundred Woodcuts From Sketches In The Collection Of Her Majesty The Queen and Other Sources.
With a History Of His Art Life by W. Cosmo Monkhouse
Published by Virtue And Company Limited: London c1880 (undated)

"Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802 - 1873) was an English painter and sculptor, well known for his paintings of animals - particularly horses, dogs, and stags. However, his best-known works are the lion sculptures at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square. He was knighted in 1850, and although elected to be president of the Royal Academy in 1866 he declined the invitation. In his late thirties Landseer suffered what is now believed to be a substantial nervous breakdown, and for the rest of his life was troubled by recurring bouts of melancholy, hypochondria, and depression, often aggravated by alcohol and drug use. In the last few years of his life Landseer's mental stability was problematic, and at the request of his family he was declared insane in July 1872. "

General wear and minor peeling to leather covers. Spine in very good order. No inscriptions with very clean marbled endpapers. Front cover a bit wobbly but holding strong and very secure. Lacking page guard for frontispiece as shown. "The Stag" plate is loose and appears to have been framed at some point before being returned to the book. There are no other loose pages and all plates are present. Some light foxing is present with the majority of the book being very clean. Good to very good condition overall.
