"
This impressive large-format volume is a high-quality photographic facsimile of Caerten van alle de Neder-Landen, reproducing one of the most influential early-seventeenth-century descriptions and visual surveys of the Low Countries. The original work, closely associated with Lodovico Guicciardini's landmark chorography, was issued in Utrecht in 1617 by Abraham van Herwijck and brought together maps, city views, coats of arms, and allegorical engravings that captured the political, commercial, and urban landscape of the Netherlands at the height of the Dutch Golden Age. The facsimile faithfully preserves the typography, plate layouts, and engravings of the original, allowing the work to be appreciated at its intended scale and visual richness.
The contents include finely detailed provincial maps, heraldic plates, and striking city prospects such as Rotterdam and Geertruydenberg, along with elaborate engraved title pages and emblematic imagery. These plates are central documents of early modern cartography and urban representation, combining geographical information with civic pride and symbolic decoration. The generous folio size (approximately 35 × 25 cm) ensures clarity of line and detail, closely matching the proportions of the seventeenth-century source and making the volume both visually commanding and highly usable for study.
While clearly a later facsimile reprint—most likely produced in Europe in the mid-to-late twentieth century for scholarly or collector use—the book remains an authoritative and handsome surrogate for an extremely scarce and valuable original atlas. Free from modern intrusions such as ISBNs or contemporary title pages, it offers an authentic viewing experience of a foundational work in the history of the Low Countries. This volume would particularly appeal to collectors of historical cartography, Dutch Golden Age scholars, architectural and urban historians, and admirers of early European engraving."
