Together, Dick and Crusoe encounter buffalo hunts, wild animals, hostile terrain, pursuit, capture and conflict, with the dog's courage and loyalty repeatedly proving essential to their survival. Ballantyne combines fast-moving adventure with detailed descriptions of frontier travel and outdoor life, while the close companionship between boy and dog provides the emotional centre of the narrative. As with other Victorian frontier fiction, its depiction of Indigenous peoples reflects the attitudes and conventions of the period in which it was written.
Published by Blackie & Son Limited of London, Glasgow and Bombay, this attractive undated edition dates from approximately 1910 and is illustrated with colour plates by Henry Webb. The book retains its original red leather prize binding, decorated with an elegant gilt design to the spine and gilt ruling to the boards. A 1913 prize plate from Toorak Preparatory Grammar School, Glamorgan, records its presentation for mapping and provides appealing early Melbourne educational provenance."
