The Poetical Works Of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Published by W.P. Nimmo, Hay & Mitchell: Edinburgh c1900 (undated)
Presentation Copy - All Edges Gilt

"The Poetical Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow presents an extensive collection of verse by one of nineteenth-century America's most celebrated poets. Its contents include the narrative poem Evangeline, selections from Voices of the Night, earlier poems and translations, together with such enduring favourites as "A Psalm of Life," "The Reaper and the Flowers," "Footsteps of Angels" and "The Village Blacksmith." Longfellow's accessible language, strong narrative style and recurring themes of faith, duty, love, loss and perseverance made his poetry enormously popular throughout the English-speaking world.

Published in Edinburgh by W.P. Nimmo, Hay & Mitchell, this attractive undated edition dates from approximately 1900. It opens with an engraved portrait frontispiece of Longfellow accompanied by a facsimile signature, while the decorative title page features a vignette illustration. Produced at a time when Longfellow remained a favourite author for household libraries, school prizes and formal gifts, the volume is a handsome example of the substantial collected-poetry editions issued for the late-Victorian and Edwardian book trade.

The book is bound in flexible black leather with gilt titles to the spine and Longfellow's name elegantly stamped in gilt across the front cover. All page edges are richly gilt, providing an especially handsome finish when the volume is closed. As a presentation copy, it combines the literary appeal of Longfellow's best-known poetry with the decorative character and personal history of an antique gift volume."
