"Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, first published in 1719, is one of the foundational works of English fiction and the enduring model for the castaway adventure. The novel follows the restless Crusoe, who disregards his father's advice and goes to sea in search of travel and opportunity. After surviving storms, captivity and other misfortunes, he is shipwrecked on a remote island, where he must depend upon his intelligence, determination and practical skill to remain alive.

Crusoe salvages provisions and tools from the wreck, builds a fortified home, cultivates crops, domesticates animals and gradually creates an ordered existence from the wilderness. His long solitude encourages deep reflection upon providence, faith and his earlier choices, while the discovery of a footprint reveals that he may not be alone. His eventual meeting with Friday introduces the novel's best-known relationship and begins the sequence of events leading towards Crusoe's rescue after 28 years of isolation.

Published in London by J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd in 1938, this volume forms number 59 in the celebrated Everyman's Library, edited by Ernest Rhys and issued in its "For Young People" series. First published in this Everyman edition in 1906, the present printing is bound in blue cloth with gilt spine lettering and a blind-stamped publisher's device to the front board. The volume includes an editor's note, numerous black-and-white illustrations and decorative elements, presenting Defoe's classic survival narrative in an attractive illustrated edition produced and decorated by Eric Ravilious."
