1930 Album Of Scenes From The Oberammergau Passion Play Antique Theatre BookAlbum Of Scenes From The Oberammergau Passion PlayPictures Published by Bruckmann - MunichAlbum Hand-Made In M.K. Henneberger's Studio Of Applied Art In Munich 1930"The Oberammergau Passion Play (German: Oberammergauer Passionsspiele) is a passion play that has been performed every 10 years from 1634 to 1674 and each decadal year since 1680 (with a few exceptions) by the inhabitants of the village of Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany. It was written by Othmar Weis, J A Daisenberger, Otto Huber, Christian Stuckl, Rochus Dedler, Eugen Papst, Marcus Zwink, Ingrid H Shafer, and the inhabitants of Oberammergau, with music by Dedler. Since its first production it has been performed on open-air stages in the village. The text of the play is a composite of four distinct manuscripts dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The play is a staging of Jesus' passion, covering the short final period of his life from his visit to Jerusalem and leading to his execution by crucifixion. It is the earliest continuous survivor of the age of Christian religions vernacular drama."General wear, fading and a few marks to cover and spine as shown. Album contains 25 mounted black and white photographs, most with decorative tissue papers intact. There is a cluster of blank pages at the end of the album, presumably for notes to be taken about the performance. Photos are printed on thick card and the pages appear to be a form of parchment. There is also a small, 4 page flyer about the performance as shown. Good condition overall. Please study photos to understand condition. " Album of Scenes from the Oberammergau Passion Play , published by Bruckmann of Munich in 1930, is a finely produced visual tribute to one of Europe's most enduring religious and cultural traditions. This hand-crafted album, created in the M.K. Henneberger Studio of Applied Art, presents a series of high-quality photographic plates capturing key scenes from the celebrated Passion Play of Oberammergau — a performance staged once every decade by the villagers of the Bavarian Alps since the 17th century. The images convey both the devotional intensity and theatrical grandeur of the production, depicting the actors in full costume within meticulously designed biblical settings. The craftsmanship of the album itself, with its handmade binding and artistic presentation, reflects the reverence and artistry associated with the event it commemorates.
Produced in the interwar period, this 1930 edition stands as both a work of photographic art and a cultural document of faith, community, and continuity. It exemplifies the fusion of fine printing, photography, and artisanal bookmaking characteristic of Munich's artistic workshops of the era. This scarce and beautifully executed volume will appeal to collectors of religious art, theatre history, and fine European craftsmanship, as well as admirers of the enduring Oberammergau tradition."
