1928 The Gypsy by W.B. Trites Antique 1st Edition Fiction Book Victor Gollancz

The Gypsy
By W.B. Trites
Published by Victor Gollancz Ltd: London 1928 1st Edition

"The Gypsy is a colourful and atmospheric novel set amid the Romani communities of Andalusia in southern Spain. W.B. Trites draws upon the region's rugged scenery, traditional customs and passionate temperament to create a vivid tale of wandering life, romance and personal conflict. Written with the heightened drama and exoticism characteristic of its period, the story offers an evocative literary portrait of a community living beyond the conventions of settled society.

William Budd Trites was an American-born novelist and journalist who spent much of his literary career in Europe, particularly France. His familiarity with continental settings lends the novel a strong sense of place, while its themes of freedom, desire, loyalty and fate reflect his interest in unconventional lives and characters. Today, the work is also of interest as an example of the romanticised manner in which Romani culture and Spanish life were frequently depicted in English-language fiction during the early twentieth century.

Published in London by Victor Gollancz Ltd in 1928, this first edition comprises 144 pages and is bound in the publisher's original black cloth, with the title, author and publisher lettered in red upon the spine. The title page bears the Gollancz Henrietta Street imprint and 1928 publication date, while the printer's statement records production by the Camelot Press and binding by the Leighton-Straker Bookbinding Company. An uncommon early Gollancz novel and an appealing piece of 1920s fiction with a distinctive Andalusian setting."
