Complete 6 Volume Set In Original Cloth Bindings
"A Commentary on the Holy Bible by Matthew Henry stands as one of the most enduring and influential works of Protestant biblical scholarship, first conceived in the early eighteenth century and continuously reprinted throughout the nineteenth century for clergy, scholars, and devout lay readers. Henry's approach combines close textual exposition with practical moral application, offering verse-by-verse commentary that seeks not only to explain scripture but to guide daily Christian conduct. Written in a clear yet reflective style, the work covers the entire Old and New Testaments, emphasising providence, personal piety, and the ethical responsibilities of faith, qualities that ensured its lasting authority across generations.
This illustrated six-volume edition, published by Ward, Lock & Co. Limited around 1895, reflects the Victorian appetite for substantial, handsomely produced religious reference works. The set includes numerous engraved plates depicting biblical landscapes, historical sites, and scriptural scenes, which complement the commentary by situating the text within a visual and historical framework. Edited with memoirs of Matthew Henry's life and character, along with introductory material by respected nineteenth-century theologians, this edition bridges Henry's original Nonconformist theology with later Victorian religious scholarship and pedagogy.
Offered here as a complete six-volume set in original cloth bindings, this edition represents a significant late-nineteenth-century presentation of a cornerstone work in biblical interpretation. Its scale, illustrations, and enduring theological relevance make it particularly appealing to collectors of religious books, students of biblical commentary, historians of Victorian publishing, and those with an interest in classic Protestant devotional literature."
