"George Eliel Sargent (1809 - 1883) attempted business in Oxford before moving to Whitfield near Dover after his marriage. Shortly thereafter he contributed to the Leisure Hour and other religious magazines. In the 1850s, he began writing religious fiction for young readers, several of which such as The Story of a Pocket Bible and The Story of a City Arab went through several editions. His prolific work in this line led him to become the tract editor for the Religious Tract Society. He resided in Whitfield for many years before his death in 1883 at Dalston Rise."
