The Tower Of London. A Historical Romance.
By W.H. Ainsworth
Published by Richard Bentley: London c1840 (undated)
NOTE: THIS BOOK LACKS THE TITLE PAGE. Research indicates that this book matches exactly with the details noted in this listing. The original bindings, number of pages (439 pages all present) and appearance of the book are all commensurate with this assessment being a likely 1840 1st Edition copy. It contains all 40 full page engraved plates and 58 woodcuts throughout the text - this is compared to a reference copy that declares the same 40 plates and 58 woodcuts. Please get in touch if there are any other specific/edition related queries you may have.

" William Harrison Ainsworth (1805 - 1882) was an English historical novelist born at King Street in Manchester. He trained as a lawyer, but the legal profession held no attraction for him. While completing his legal studies in London he met the publisher John Ebers, at that time manager of the King's Theatre, Haymarket. Ebers introduced Ainsworth to literary and dramatic circles, and to his daughter, who became Ainsworth's wife."

Pages have a pleasant aged patina whilst foxing affects most of the plates to varying degrees. Original covers and spine in good condition with some fading and rub through evident as shown. 2-3 plates are loose, one of which has been trimmed in size as shown. I noticed the odd small page tear with no loss as I inspected each page. The odd age spot present. The asking price has been heavily discounted due to the missing title page otherwise good to very good condition.

Size 23.5cm x 15cm x 4cm - 439 Pages
