The Annual Register, or A View of the History, Politics and Literature for the Year 1846 offers an authoritative contemporary record of one of the most transformative years of mid-19th-century Britain. Published in 1847 by F. & J. Rivington, it chronicles domestic and international affairs with a balanced mix of narrative and documentation, detailing such key events as the repeal of the Corn Laws under Sir Robert Peel, the Irish Famine's deepening tragedy, the early movements of industrial reform, and Britain's shifting colonial policies. Alongside the political chronicle, the volume includes literary reviews, biographical notices, and essays reflecting the intellectual and moral temper of the Victorian era.
Each Annual Register volume was intended as both a historical reference and a mirror of public sentiment, and the 1846 issue exemplifies the publication's blend of scholarship and immediacy. It captures the transition between old Tory conservatism and the liberalizing forces that would reshape Britain's political and social fabric. The literary and scientific sections enrich the record further, preserving the voices of the time and revealing how progress, reform, and empire were debated in the drawing rooms and press of Victorian England.
This particular copy carries exceptional provenance, having been presented to the Midland Conservative Club by The Right Hon. Lord Randolph S. Churchill, M.P.—then Secretary of State for India and Club President in 1885, and father of Sir Winston Churchill. The association adds remarkable historical depth, connecting the volume's 1840s narrative of British politics with the Churchill family's later legacy of leadership. This distinguished edition would appeal to collectors of political history, Churchilliana, and 19th-century British literature.
Lord Randolph Henry Spencer-Churchill (1849 - 1895) was a British statesman. Churchill was a Tory radical and coined the term 'Tory democracy'. He inspired a generation of party managers, created the National Union of the Conservative Party, and broke new ground in modern budgetary presentations, attracting admiration and criticism from across the political spectrum. His most acerbic critics were in his own party, among his closest friends; but his disloyalty to Lord Salisbury was the beginning of the end of what could have been a glittering career. His elder son was
Winston Churchill
, who wrote a biography of him in 1906."
