1840 Proper Lessons For Morning & Evening Prayer Antique Christian Theology Book

Proper Lessons To Be Read At Morning And Evening Prayer On The Sundays And Other Holidays Throughout The Year.
With A Short Practical Commentary And Explanatory Notes by John James
Printed For J.G.F and J. Rivington: London 1840
Carries An Inscription Dated 1840

"This substantial mid-Victorian devotional volume was designed to guide Anglican worship throughout the liturgical year, pairing the appointed Scripture readings for Sundays and holy days with concise practical commentary and explanatory notes. Written by John James, D.D., Prebendary of Peterborough, the work reflects the High Church emphasis of the early Victorian period, aiming to deepen congregational understanding of Scripture as it was heard in public worship. The text is carefully structured to accompany Morning and Evening Prayer, offering theological clarity, moral reflection, and pastoral application intended to make the biblical lessons more intelligible and spiritually effective for both clergy and lay readers.

Published in London in 1840 by J. G. F. & J. Rivington and dedicated by permission to His Royal Highness Prince Albert, this edition carries strong contemporary resonance with the early years of Queen Victoria's reign. The presence of an early ownership inscription dated 1840 firmly anchors the book within its original devotional context, while the solid nineteenth-century binding and well-preserved typography reflect its intended use as a serious working religious text rather than a decorative volume. This book would particularly appeal to collectors of Victorian religious works, Anglican liturgical history, and nineteenth-century devotional literature."

Heavy wear, fading and some damage to covers and spine as shown. Lovely inscription from 1840. Pages are clean and well presented with pleasant age toning. The binding is quite fragile with text block all but split down the middle although there are no loose pages and the book is still holding together. Would benefit from a gentle hand or even a rebind for this special volume. Please study photos to further understand condition.
