1826 Illustrations Of Anglo-Saxon Poetry by JJ Conybeare Antiquarian Book 1st Ed

Illustrations Of Anglo-Saxon Poetry
By John Josias Conybeare
Edited by William Daniel Conybeare
Printed for Harding and Lepard: London 1826 1st Edition

"Illustrations of Anglo-Saxon Poetry, published in 1826, is the groundbreaking first edition of John Josias Conybeare's pioneering effort to present, translate, and interpret the earliest vernacular literature of England. Drawing upon manuscripts then accessible only to scholars, Conybeare provides both original Old English texts and careful poetic translations, illuminating works such as "Beowulf," "The Traveller's Song," "The Battle of Brunanburh," and various ecclesiastical and heroic fragments. The book was the first of its kind to introduce these poetry traditions to a broader educated readership, bridging the gap between medieval philology and Romantic-era historical curiosity.

Edited posthumously by his brother, William Daniel Conybeare, this edition includes extensive critical commentary, linguistic notes, and contextual essays that help situate Anglo-Saxon verse within early Northern European culture. Conybeare's scholarship is remarkable for its era: he highlights metrical structure, imagery, and mythological elements long before Anglo-Saxon studies became a formal academic discipline. The work also preserves translations that influenced Victorian scholars who later shaped the modern study of Old English and early English identity.

This 1826 Harding & Lepard first edition is now highly regarded as a foundational text in the revival of Old English literature, prized for its scholarly pedigree and early engagement with texts previously unknown outside of manuscript collections. Its combination of original language reproductions, pioneering translations, and early academic apparatus make it an essential reference for collectors of early medieval studies, antiquarian scholarship, and works associated with the pre-Victorian rediscovery of England's literary origins—particularly appealing to enthusiasts of Anglo-Saxon philology and early English poetry."
