"This is a scarce and intellectually significant early 19th-century multi-volume set of De L'Allemagne by Mme la Baronne de Staël-Holstein, one of the most influential literary and cultural works of its era. First issued in 1810, this example comprises four volumes (Tomes III-VI), printed in Paris by H. Nicolle and later reissued for the London market by John Murray in 1813, with further continental distribution noted in Berlin (1814). De Staël's work offered a profound and at times controversial exploration of German literature, philosophy, and national identity during the Napoleonic period.
Bound in contemporary marbled boards with remnants of original spine labels, the volumes retain their authentic early 19th-century presentation. The bindings show honest age-related wear, including rubbing, edge wear, and some loss to the spines, consistent with books of this period. Internally, the text blocks are generally sound, with typical foxing, toning, and occasional staining, yet remain very readable and structurally intact.
Original sets of De L'Allemagne, particularly in unrestored period bindings, are increasingly sought after due to the work's enduring importance in European intellectual history. This is a genuine antique set with strong visual appeal and historical weight, well suited to collectors of early continental literature, philosophy, and Napoleonic-era works."
