1813 Rejected Addresses: New Theatrum Poetarum Antique British Literature Book

Rejected Addresses, or The New Theatrum Poetarum
Printed For John Miller: London 1813 9th Edition

" Rejected Addresses; or, The New Theatrum Poetarum is a celebrated work of literary parody first published in 1812 and quickly achieving remarkable popularity, as reflected in this 1813 ninth edition. The book arose from a public competition held for the reopening of London's Drury Lane Theatre, in which writers were invited to submit an address to be spoken on opening night. Although many entries were received, the address ultimately delivered was written by Lord Byron. In response, James and Horace Smith composed a series of mock "rejected" addresses, humorously imagining how leading poets of the age might have written their submissions.

The result is a brilliant collection of satirical verse that imitates the styles of well-known literary figures such as Wordsworth, Scott, Southey, Moore, and Crabbe. Each piece cleverly reproduces the distinctive voice and mannerisms of its target while exaggerating them for comic effect. The parodies are both affectionate and sharply observant, demonstrating the authors' remarkable ability to mimic the prevailing literary fashions of the early nineteenth century while entertaining readers with wit and playful criticism.

Upon publication, Rejected Addresses became an immediate sensation, widely praised for its humour and literary ingenuity. It remains one of the finest examples of English parody, capturing the vibrant poetic culture of the Romantic period while gently satirising its excesses. This early nineteenth-century edition stands as a charming relic of Regency literary life and would appeal to collectors of Romantic-era literature, satire, and early nineteenth-century English printing."
