1802 Poetical Works of Edmund Spenser by J. Aiken Vol. 5 Antique Poetry Book

The Works Of The English Poets
The Poetical Works of Edmund Spenser In Six Volumes (This being Volume 5 Only)
From The Text Of J. Upton
Preface by J. Aiken
Printed For J. Heath: London 1802

"This 1802 London printing of The Poetical Works of Edmund Spenser forms Volume V of the six-volume series issued under The Works of the English Poets, edited from the authoritative Upton text and enriched with additional biographical and critical commentary by J. Aikin, M.D. As one of the principal early-19th-century scholarly editions of Spenser, it offers a carefully presented text of The Faerie Queene, here comprising the entirety of Book VI together with the related Cantos of Mutabilitie and supplementary pieces such as Colin Clout's Come Home Again and The Shepherd's Calendar. Elegant copperplate engravings appear throughout, providing dramatic visual interpretations of key scenes with the fine stipple and line technique typical of the period.

Printed for J. Heath and G. Kearsley, this volume reflects the transitional style of early Regency book production, combining substantial scholarship with an attractive format suited to collectors and serious readers. The period full leather binding (well-worn but appealing in its antique character) complements the literary significance of Spenser's epic and the historic standing of this early critical edition. This book will appeal to collectors of Spenser, enthusiasts of 18th- and early-19th-century poetry, and readers with an interest in early scholarly editions of major English literary works."
