" Charles Rollin (1661 - 1741) was a French historian and educator. Rollin's literary work dates chiefly from the later years of his life, when he had been forbidden to teach. His once famous Ancient History (French: Histoire Ancienne, 12 vols., Paris, 1730-38) and the less generally read Roman History (Histoire Romaine, only five of nine volumes finished by the time of his death) were avowed compilations, uncritical and somewhat inaccurate. But they instructed and interested, generation after generation. "

Heavy wear to original covers and spines with some damage as shown. Note that all covers are secure. Endpapers with late 19th century inscriptions. Includes 9 folding plates/maps + 5 frontis across the 5 volumes. Plates with some tears as would be expected and soft edges however all are in good condition. Very minor foxing to prelim pages of a couple of volumes and the odd age spot. General aged patina to pages. Books present very well overall and are a wonderful example of Rollins famous work.
